Medical technology transfer and physician-patient conversation

Article Abstract:

Informal communication is known to facilitate industrial technology transfer. An analysis is done to investigate the hypothesis that interactive conversation in medical care affects physician and patient collaboration in the transfer of soft therapeutic technology into the patient's body functions. Two different situations are presented where the recommendation of a non-communicative physician is rejected by a patient and where the same patient responds to innovative technology with a conversing physician.

The impact of technological change on health care goes beyond the effects on doctors and patients. An economic analysis on the Netherlands is done to examine the impact of technological change on health care expenditures from 1970-1990. Increase in health care expenditures reaching 460% was due to inflation and technological change, while ageing had a minimal impact.
