Mimicking Mother Nature: take a behind-the-scenery look at the world's first automated aquarium

Article Abstract:

The Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, TN, makes use of a complex computer network that simulates changes in light, temperature and water so that the inhabitants of the aquarium can experience an environment similar to their natural habitat. The aquarium is devoted exclusively to fresh water.

The 1992 Mobile Robotics Competition featured ten contending robots that depended on artificial intelligence. The robots participated in events that involved obstacle-avoiding, problem-solving and other tests. The winner was an entry from the University of Michigan.

The bionic heart

HeartMate, an experimental blood pump developed by Thermo Cardiosystems Inc, has been implanted in the abdomen of Michael Templeton. Templeton is the victim of a diseased heart, and the HeartMate system efficiently pumps blood until a donor heart can be found.
