Mineralogy and surface properties of municipal solid waste ash

Article Abstract:

The main physicochemical qualities of the inorganic part of municipal solid waste (MSW) ash are discussed. Bulk chemical analysis and x-ray diffraction were used to quantify the mineralogy and distribution of elements in different chemical phases. Sequential chemical extraction was used to examine the sequestration of trace metals. The applicability of the approach for characterizing the inorganic chemistry and mineralogy of the MSW ash was demonstrated.

Reduction of trace element concentrations in alkaline waste porewaters by dedolomitization

Article Abstract:

Reducing the concentrations of undesirable elements in leachate waters by adding dolomite to alkaline waste materials is discussed. Selenium, boron and astatine were entrained to evaluate the potential of calcite precipitation. Results indicate that porewater concentrations of boron and selenium may be decreased by adding dolomite to lime-rich waste material.

Anaerobic corrosion of granular iron: measurement and interpretation of hydrogen evolution rates

Article Abstract:

Corrosion rates of granular iron metal under a variety of solutions were determined by measuring hydrogen uptake by solid iron. The tests were conducted to determine the influence of iron on groundwater chemical composition. Iron samples showed increasing corrosion rate measurements to solutions containing chlorine, sulfate and bicarbonate ions, respectively.
