Molecule promises a better buckyball

Article Abstract:

Synthetic organic chemist Jay Siegel and his colleagues have discovered how to synthesize buckyball-type molecules that may be easier to adjust for particular uses than conventional buckyballs. The new molecule retains its buckyball advantages as its chemical and physical properties are changed.

Will future computers be all wet?

Article Abstract:

The new field of supramolecular chemistry is developing self-assembling chemical structures that are capable of recognizing specific sets of atoms. Potential applications for the structures include molecular switches and wires and a computer that relies on the interaction of supermolecules.

Giant atoms cast long shadow

Article Abstract:

Researchers are exploring the use of Rydberg atoms, which have diameters up to 10,000 times those of ordinary atoms, as supersensitive electric and chemical sensors. The giant atoms are allowing scientists to investigate the borders between quantum and classical physics.
