Soil-borne mobile colloids as influenced by water flow and organic carbon

Article Abstract:

Research into the importance of natural organic materials and pore water velocity for mobile colloid generation will help fill a gap in the understanding of the mechanisms which play a part in the production of subsurface mobile colloids and thus increase knowledge about transport of contaminants by colloids. The rate of water movement in laminar flow through the pore space was found to significantly affect production of mobile colloids in the subsurface environment, and the change in pore water flow rate also influenced factors including electrophoretic mobility, particle size and mineralogy.

Formation of the "Al13" tridecameric polycation under diverse synthesis conditions

Article Abstract:

The formation of Al13 was studied under a wide variety of synthesis conditions. Analyses of ferron and nuclear magnetic resonance were conducted. The results indicated that 26% to 87% of the tridecamer AlT was found in solutions that had been partially neutralized with aqueous NaHCO3. Considerable amounts of Al13 were also present in solutions that had been neutralized with solid CaCO3, solid MgO or NH3 vapor. The injection of a base into an acidic Al solution produced more Al13. The tridecamer's 'yield' decreased as AlT decreased.

Identification and quantification of the "Al13" tridecameric polycation using ferron

Article Abstract:

Al-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is usually used to identify the AlO4Al12(OH)24(H2O)(sub 12)(super 7+) polycation (Al13). The reaction kinetics of ferron and Al13 were studied. A quantitative analysis of partially neutralized solutions revealed that the spectrophotometric ferron reagent (Alb) fraction measured with ferron exhibited a correspondence with Al13 in newly prepared solutions. This indicates that the ferron technique is easier to use and less expensive than Al-NMR analyses.
