Nuclear sites: United States and Russia

Article Abstract:

Environmental agencies in the United States and Russia are now beginning to set up programmes to look together at issues such as cleaning up radioactively contaminated sites. However, problems over the protection of intellectual property are preventing information on decontamination procedures being exchanged, and this legal issue must be resolved before each country can use the other's technology. Nevertheless, it is a good sign that broad technological issues have begun to be discussed, and there are positive prospects for actual cleanup operations taking place.

Animal biomarkers

Article Abstract:

A useful measure of the impact of chemicals and radiation on the environment can be obtained through animal biomarkers, which show changes in enzyme activity or in the presence of a particular biogenic substance. Biomarkers are an important tool of ecotoxicology, and allow a detailed study of environmental pollution in wildlife. This in turn can indicate when wildlife health is in danger, allows the quality of the environment to be assessed and ensures that dangers to humans from eating wildlife can be monitored.

The GAO reports: cleanup delays at the largest Superfund sites

Article Abstract:

A General Accounting Office (GAO) report on four Superfund sites in western Montana says that cleanup of hazardous wastes has been limited and that hundreds of millions of dollars may be needed to safely cleanup the sites. The sites are called Clark Fork and cover an area of 50,000 acres. Between 1980 and Jan 1991, the EPA spent $33 million and the Atlantic Richfield Corp spent $22 million on studies and cleanup.
