More parking above

Article Abstract:

The owners of the 6900 Fannin office/garage complex at the Texas Medical Center of Houston wanted to increase the parking places to cope up with the growing demand for spaces. The problems arising from this extension concerned the load-carrying capacity, structural layout and integrity of the existing structure because adding six floors was considered the most cost effective way to expand capacity. The project needed engineering innovations to find a solution for the incorporation of new structures into the existing one within a budget while meeting city high-rise construction building codes and allowing the garage to remain open.

Selecting tower cranes

Article Abstract:

Tower cranes are more efficient and versatile than conventional cranes in the construction of skyscrapers. Project management teams should efficiently choose these cranes for types, sizes and capacities, and ensure proper erection and dismantling of the cranes. Careful selection and use of hoisting facilities such as tower cranes improve profitability and save time, thereby helping in the efficient construction of high-rise buildings.

Reaching for the sky

Article Abstract:

The Taipei 101, rising 508 m above the city of Taipei, Taiwan will be the tallest building in the world when it opens in 2004. This building will resist the devastating typhoons, earthquakes and sway with an ingenious system of outrigger trusses, supercolumns and tuned-mass dampers.
