Much-studied butteryfly winks out on Stanford preserve

Article Abstract:

Bay checkerspot butterflies could not be found at the Jasper Ridge preserve, the Stanford university site where the insects where first identified in 1960. Scientists had known for some time that the population was becoming extinct, but chose to study the extinction process rather than try to save the insect.

Signature-tagged mutagenesis and molecular mycology were used to analyze the Candida glabrata, a yeast that causes mucosal and systemic infections. A new gene was discovered, EPA1, that enables Candida to adhere to skin cells.
