Multivariate statistical examination of spatial and temporal patterns of heavy metal contamination in New Bedford Harbor marine sediments

Article Abstract:

Sediment core samples obtained from New Bedford Harbor in Massachusetts were analyzed using multivariate statistical methods to determine the spatial and temporal patterns of heavy metal contamination. The results showed that the types of metal present largely determined their spatial variation. Both Pb and Zn were uniformly elevated but sediments from the harbor's inner areas contained substantial amounts of Cr, Cd and Cu.

A case history of contamination by polychloro-1,3-butadiene congeners

Article Abstract:

Years of uncontrolled industrial development have left the water in Lombardia, Italy, heavily contaminated by industrial wastes. The source of the pollutants was determined by comparing samples taken from the bottom fraction of a rectification column for the production of tetrachloroethene with the carbon disulfide extract of a water sample collected from a well of the municipal water supply of Milan.

Contamination of shellfish by stool-shed viruses: methods of detection

Article Abstract:

Methods for detecting stool-shed viruses in contaminated shellfish can be categorized into three main types: adsorption-elution-precipitation, elution-precipitation, and filtration-hydroextraction. Virus assays used to detect viruses in shellfish are also discussed. Consumption of infected shellfish can lead to hepatitis A and viral gastroenteritis in humans.
