NASA encourages researchers to map search for alien earths

Article Abstract:

NASA has encouraged three research groups to compete to develop techniques to find and image earthlike planets orbiting other stars. State-of-the-art telescopes may already be able to detect Jupiter-size planets. Potential strategies and optics for finding planets are discussed.

Supernovae offer a first glimpse of the universe's fate

Article Abstract:

Observations of Type Ia supernovae are providing indications of the rate of cosmic expansion and of the ultimate fate of the universe. Preliminary results suggest that the density of matter in the universe may halt expansion in the distant future.

Extreme ultraviolet satellites open new view of the sky

Article Abstract:

The extreme ultraviolet satellites ROSAT and EUVE (Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer) have provided new and unexpected information about the cosmos. For example, the satellites revealed a halo of hot gas that surrounds the Milky Way galaxy.
