NIH gets a share of BRCA1 patent

Article Abstract:

NIH, the Univ of Utah and Myriad Genetics Inc. agreed to share patent rights for the breast-cancer gene BRCA1, after an application by Utah failed to mention the NIH contribution. The National Institute of Environmenal Health Sciences's Roger Wiseman and Andrew Futreal were added to the inventors list.

Sequencers call for faster data release

Article Abstract:

The Human Genome Organization has issued an appeal for a change in patent policies to promote the early release of research data on human genome sequencing. The group wants researchers to have a year to apply for a patent after announcing a discovery.

Rifkin's latest target: genetic testing

Article Abstract:

Jeremy Rifkin began a campaign to oppose the patenting of breast cancer genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 and to support new laws limiting access to human genetic information in May 1996. His campaign has the support of women's groups in 69 countries.
