N.J. hazardous waste cleanup funds now guaranteed by constitution

Article Abstract:

New Jersey voters have amended their state constitution regarding funds for hazardous cleanups. Under the amendments, funding for hazardous waste management, which will now be comprised of $15 million from a spill fund and 4% of the corporate tax, will be independent of economic conditions and will be among the state government's priorities. State environmentalists claim that New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman has cut the state Department of Environmental Protection's (DEC) budget by 30% resulting in a decrease in DEC's pollution and science programs.

California struggles with presence of MTBE in public drinking water wells

Article Abstract:

An underground spill in Santa Monica, CA, of gasoline containing methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) generated concern over MTBE's health effects. Four bills on the issue were proposed in the state legislature. One calls for a one-year ban on the sale of gasoline containing MTBE, and another requires more research on the health impact of MTBE. The California EPA reports that studies on the health effects of MTBE-contaminated drinking water reveal very little information.
