NOAA project attempts to rebuild coral reefs

Article Abstract:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has embarked on a project aimed at rebuilding coral reefs destroyed by shipwrecks. Project director Charles M. Wahle has declared the project successful. The reconstruction project involved 4,000 square meters of reef at two sites of ship groundings off Key Largo in 1989, which had been ruined by the groundings and the ensuing salvaging operations. Marine biologists contend, however, that prevention is still the best way of preserving reefs. The NOAA reconstruction project and the widespread destruction of coral reefs were the topics at a symposium of the American Assn. for the Advancement of Science on Feb. 11, 1996.
