Several states pass laws to regulate animal waste

Article Abstract:

Animal waste pollution is intended to be controlled through regulations passed by US states Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Nebraska and Oklahoma in spring 1998. However, the states have not yet identified technologies that will be used to effect the new laws and they are yet to determine who will pay for them. Larry Gearhardt, legislative council to the Ohio Farm Bureau, said that efforts to control pollution from animal waste have intensified because the states want to avoid the environment crises that have occurred in other states.

Mr. Bush charts his energy future

Article Abstract:

President George Bush and Dick Cheney's energy policies are reviewed, including protection of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other national parks; the building of new pipelines, oil refineries, and power plants; and a cut in the budget for renewable energy resources research. The U.S. dependence on foreign oil and gas, the California energy crisis, and high U.S. emission levels of greenhouse gases show the need for a new energy policy.
