Some research leaders as asking for guidelines on the use of materials transfer agreements (MTAs), which are contracts that protect the commercial interests of corporations sponsoring research. Scientists maintain that MTAs are hampering free publication and free exchange of materials.

Homely fish draws attention to Amazon deforestation

Article Abstract:

Researchers based in Manaus, Brazil, are attempting to promote tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) as a symbol of the underwater habitat that forms during the Amazon's wet season. They hope the popular, edible fish will draw attention to the imperiled state of the unusual environment.

UCSF, Stanford hospitals to merge

Article Abstract:

A wave of mergers among university hospitals has begun around the US, as financing organizations demand that they become as efficient as other hospitals. Stanford Univ and UC-San Francisco are the latest to announce merger plans, with the union expected in 1997.
