New labs expand seismic testing capabilities

Article Abstract:

Structural engineers will now have the opportunity to conduct some of the largest seismic tests ever done on retrofit elements for long-span bridges and two-story buildings with the completion of two new seismic laboratories. The first facility is located at the University of California in San Diego, will be used in testing the bearings, dampers and lockdown devices used in the state's seven largest bridges. It has the capacity to simulate some of world's the worst earthquakes. The other facility, at Georgia Tech's Structural Engineering and Materials Laboratory, can test full-scale bridges and buildings with earthquake loadings from two different directions.

A dresser for the ages: in just one short season, Sandy Powell has managed to design movie costumes four centuries apart, each with a sublime ratio of grandeur to grit

Article Abstract:

Motion picture costumer Sandy Powell enjoys approaching films with a realistic viewpoint. She believes that characters should reflect that they have been wearing their clothes for a period of time, and there may be some dirt or wrinkles. Other films that bear her mark are `Wings of the Dove' and `Orlando.' Her latest project is The End of the Affair' with Ralph Fiennes and Julianne Moore.
