New mammal data challenge evolutionary pulse theory

Article Abstract:

Researchers at the North American Paleontological Convention are skeptical about the research results of Elisabeth Vrba, who claims that climate change had a dramatic effect on evolution. African fossil records indicate that an evolutionary shift occurred over a period of at least a million years.

Animal oddballs brought into the ancestral fold?

Article Abstract:

Geologist John Grotzinger and geochronologist Samuel Bowring and their colleagues present evidence indicating that the Ediacara did not die off until at least the beginning on the Cambrian. The evidence suggests that the Ediacara may have contributed to animal evolution.

Timing evolution's early bursts

Article Abstract:

A new examination of the fossil record of algae indicates that the species experienced a spurt of evolutionary growth even earlier than the Cambrian explosion of 500 million years ago. A genetic innovation may be the reason for the evolutionary surge.
