New solar cells seem to have power at the right price

Article Abstract:

Two new types of thin-film solar cells may reduce solar cell manufacturing costs from about $4 per watt generated to $0.50 per watt generated. Experimental cells of a copper, indium, gallium, and selenium blend achieved 17.7% efficiency, while a cadmium and tellurium blend reached nearly 16%.

High-temperature mystery heats up

Article Abstract:

High-temperature superconductors display odd electrical and magnetic properties above their critical temperature. Most research is focusing on these properties as the normal state for cuprates. Unusual temperature- dependant effects include the Hall effect and charge-spin separation.

Polymer cells achieve new efficiency

Article Abstract:

Two research teams working independently have developed similar methods for making polymer-based solar cells 100 times more efficient. These more efficient cells are only a tenth as efficient as conventional crystalline silicon solar cells, but much less expensive to manufacture.
