New structural forms in multinationals: decentralization at the expense of personal communication networks?

Article Abstract:

Multinationals have been found to propagate personal and horizontal communication networks as indicated in recent literature. A case study done on a Finnish multinational indicates that decentralization had encouraged personal communication networks among top managers. Middle management and employees saw little chances to expand personal contacts with other units. The natural development of personal communication networks below top management was impeded by channelling, computerizing and formalizing information flows.
