Normalization and elemental sediment contamination in the coastal United States

Article Abstract:

Elemental sediment contamination data taken by the National Status and Trends Program from US coastal sites, which are relatively unaffected by human activity, were used to identify normalizing factors for elemental contamination. It was discovered that either iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al) may be used as normalizers for concentrations of arsenic, chromium, copper, nickel, lead, strontium and zinc. No normalizers were identified for silver, cadmium, mercury, selenium and tin. Fe and Al were used as normalizers to determine the spatial extent of elemental contamination in the US.

Evaluation of digestion procedures for determining silver in mussels and oysters

Article Abstract:

Digestion procedures utilizing a mixture of hydrochloric acid (HClO4) and and nitric acid (HNO3) prove more useful in determining silver (Ag) concentrations in mussel and oyster tissue. Results from the re-analyzed mussel samples using HClO4 and HNO3 indicate that only 44% of the re-studied Ag concentrations are withing 20% of the original values. Higher Ag concentrations were found in almost all the samples. About one-tenth of the samples yielded more than 100% higher concentrations.

Solubility of CdS (greenockite) in sulfidic waters at 25 degrees centigrade

Article Abstract:

The solubility product of greenockite and the equilibrium constants of cadmium complexes in aqueous solutions are discussed. Experimental methods involved the synthesis of greenockite from pure cadmium shavings with a slight sulfur excess, x-ray diffraction and overnight solids leaching. The presence of cadmium in an anionic form in sulfidic natural waters is predicted by the solubility model.
