North woods dreaming: birding in Ontario's boreal forest

Article Abstract:

Ontario's boreal forests provide habitat and a variety of feeding and nesting opportunities to many birds.The experiences of the author who had an opportunity to conduct a bird survey for Bird Studies Canada (BSC) in Ontario's boreal forests are presented.

The rites of spring: a bird's repertoire can affect its chances of attracting a mate

Article Abstract:

Birds rush out to find a mate when seasons change from winter to spring. Male birds, which usually play the role of suitor, encounter some difficulty in attracting the females because females are picky when selecting their partners.

Birds have identifying features that birders rely on when determining theirspecies. These include wing bars, tail bands, breast streaks, and eye stripes. They are used by birds to impress mates or to camouflage themselves.
