Northumberland's ice breaker

Article Abstract:

Confederation Bridge over the Northumberland Strait links the Prince Edward Island to the mainland. It is the world's longest continuous crossing over water subject to ice floes. The bridge reduces the risk of progressive collapse, protects against impact of ice floes and bears broad fluctuations in thermal loading. The bridge is designed as a series of distinct portal frames. The main bridge superstructure consists of the cantilever main girder, a pier-top template, a continuous drop-in span and an expansion drop-in span.

Record breaker

Article Abstract:

GKN Westland Helicopters will implement a new client/server-based system developed by Enterprise Manufacturing in spring 1997. The new system allows real-time shop floor data collection that enables employees to record part movements and project costs. Expected benefits include increased savings through the use of accurate information for procurement and more time to focus on obtaining supply contracts rather than managing them.
