FPG and Newsday settle out of court

Article Abstract:

FPG International and Newsday agree to settle a copyright infringement suit out of court. The stock photography agency had sought damages amounting to $100,000 per count on 14 counts of alleged digital plagiarism, but agreed to accept a retroactive licensing fee of $20,000. At issue was a surrealistic photo by artist James Porto, which FPG claimed Newsday had illegally scanned and published in an altered format as a cover illustration in Nov 1993. FPG noted that the decision provided a forum for educating digital artists about the importance of copyright protection, as well as setting a ten-times-normal-license formula for determining the penalty for illegal copyright infringement. For its part, Newsday pointed out that the image had been published twice in magazine format and published in the Black Book prior to its usage, reaffirming its view that it had made fair use of the photographic image.

Poynter Fonts: strange reading

Article Abstract:

Poynter Oldstyle was designed to allow typographers to explore alternatives to fonts such as Garamond, Nimrod and Times. A product of the Poynter Institute developed in conjunction with the Font Bureau, Poynter Oldstyle is based on late van der Keere romans and can be used for newspapers, magazines and online publications. Part of the Poynter Series, the Poynter Oldstyle has several closely spaced grades that permit correction to prevent distortions during the printing process. Tailored to new designs, the Poynter system permits the combination of new and traditional procedures.

Nothing wasted

Article Abstract:

Anoxic gas flotation is an innovative approach to waste treatment that may convert up to 95% of organic slurry waste into usable, high-value resource while simultaneously generating energy. An exploratory study conducted by Olympia, WA-based Cyclus EnviroSystems in a treatment plant in eastern Idaho has attained an 85% phosphorus and 23% nitrogen recovery in the potato slurry. The project also produced 36,500 kilojoules per cubic meter of natural gas.
