OPTICS AND REALISM IN RENAISSANCE ART: a much publicized assertion holds that 15th-century painters achieved a new level of realism with the help of lenses and mirrors. But recent findings cast doubt on that idea

Article Abstract:

Researchers have suggested that painters from the Renaissance era may have used a concave-mirror projector to place images onto their canvases, far earlier than previous dating to the 18th century. This hypothesis is critiqued, positing that linear perspective instead produced the realism in Renaissance art.
