New address for the 21st century

Article Abstract:

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has acquired a new suburban office building in Reston, Virginia, as a result of the swift action taken by the search committee and the ASCE foundation. ASCE bought the six story building at a bargain rate of $8 million as a result of its fund raising efforts. The fifth and the sixth floor are leased to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and an inherited tenant, respectively. The Alexander Bell Drive on the second floor is the official entrance for ASCE. A donor wall sculpture will have the names of donors in steel and concrete.

Saving the bluffs: engineering on the edge

Article Abstract:

Several geotechnical solutions were combined to prevent the erosion of a 180-ft bluff in Natchez, MS, where several houses are situated. Soil nails, soil-mixing augers and single-bored multiple anchors were used in the construction of a lightweight aggregate wall to stabilize the bluff, which is mostly made up of loess. The project was joint effort of the Natchez City Hall, Hayward Baker Inc, Ogden Environmental Energy of Atlanta and Burns Cooley Dennis Inc of Jackson MS.
