Oldest mound complex found at Louisiana site

Article Abstract:

An archaeologic discovery in northeastern Louisiana is challenging long held conceptions of the cultures of North America. The construction of earthen mounds appears to have originated some 5400 years ago. The presence of extensive architecture suggests a more complex and sophisticated society than researchers suspected.

Death in Norse Greenland

Article Abstract:

Cooperative efforts by archaeologists and paleoclimatologists are finding what caused the extinction of a medieval Norse settlement on the coast of Greenland. A worsening climate and the settlers' adherence to traditional Norse farming instead of adopting Inuit lifestyles were both to blame.

North America's wars: new analyses suggest that prehistoric North America, once considered peaceful, was instead a bitter battlefield where tribes fought over land and water

Article Abstract:

New studies of prominent prehistoric cultures in North America conflict with previous beliefs that all native tribes were peaceful people who lacked the resources for battle. There is increasing data to support that levels of war and violence in these societies were quite high.
