On World AIDS Day, a Shadow Looms Over Southern Africa

Article Abstract:

The United Nations AIDS office provides annual global statistics every year prior to World AIDS Day. The UN estimates there 5.8 million new cases of HIV infection in 1998 that bring the international total to 33.4 million. Of greatest concern is the impact on the population of sub-Saharan Africa, especially South Africa. It is estimated that 20% of the population is HIV-infected. India is another country showing increasing rates in rural areas with 13.6% of women treated in clinics diagnosed with sexually transmitted diseases. UN officials are disturbed by South Africa's refusal to treat pregnant women infected with HIV with AZT since it has been established that AZT administration helps to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

Hawaiian Plume Dynamics

Article Abstract:

Study of the Hawaiian Islands plumes of hot mantle is used to discuss whether convection of Earth's mantle is layered. Geochemistry provides some evidence for layered mantle convection, but an extensive array of seismometers will be needed to detect if a hot, narrow plume exists in the mantle beneath Hawaii.
