Overhead and profit on change orders

Article Abstract:

A survey of general engineering contractors from different public agencies, mostly from northern California, was conducted in order to determine their concept of change orders and the manner in which they assign overhead and profit to their job. It was found that it does not really matter what are classified as direct costs or what markups are allowable. The important point to consider is that contractors should be provided with fair compensation for all direct and indirect costs associated with change orders. Contractors, on the other hand, should not prepare excessively high cost estimates.

Overhead gantry long on benefits

Article Abstract:

An overhead gantry system was utilized in the construction of the Roosevelt Bridge in Stewart, FL. The 430-ft-long, 30-ft-high gantry helped overcome environmental and traffic flow problems associated with the construction. The system also simplified the development of the concrete segmental bridge spanning across two sets of railroad tracks, three roads and the Saint Lucie River. Moreover, the overhead gantry system supported logistic benefits and the delivery of bridge segments over completed decks.

Overhead estimates affect design cost comparisons

Article Abstract:

Results of studies on whether it is more expensive for a state department of transportation to outsource road and bridge designs than to perform them internally revealed that the use of consultant was more expensive. Several factors influence the high costs of hiring consultants and design cost comparisons. These include the estimation of overhead costs, insurance fees, design costs, and project management.
