Photoelastic determination of contact stresses of foundations

Article Abstract:

A new method for determining contact stresses has been developed using a rigid photoelastic material for the footing and actual soil for the base. There were several difficulties encountered in previous experimental determination of contact stresses due to the stiffness of pressure transducers and installation inefficiencies. The development of this approach is expected to enhance future researches on contact stress determination.

Determination of drained friction angle of sand from CPT

Article Abstract:

The correlation presented by a study on drained friction angle of sand from CPT is applicable in the interpretation of cone penetration tests in dry sands. However, the values of the volumetric strain delta cited by the study have limited validity because they were obtained by back-calculation from a complex theory. It is recommended that the cavity expansion be replaced by the streamline approach.

War damages and reconstruction of Peruca Dam

Article Abstract:

This article examines the war damages and reconstruction of Croatia's Peruca rockfill dam. The detonation of strategically placed explosives in 1993 resulted in severe structural damage that included deep surface craters, increased pore-water pressure, and limited sliding in the rockfill shell.
