Planning for the next flu pandemic

Article Abstract:

The US Federal Working Group on Influenza Pandemic Preparedness is preparing a plan to deal with the next killer strain of influenza A virus, to prevent a global outbreak. A US team will be on alert to travel to any outbreak site, and a nationwide vaccination program will be set in motion.

Worm genes imply a master clock

Article Abstract:

Siegrfried Hekimi and Bernard Lakowski have identified three 'clock' genes in nematodes which they say suggest a master genetic clock that regulates lifespan and rate of living. Combinations of mutations cause the worms' metabolism to slow down and its lifespan to increase up to fivefold.

Brighter prospects for the world's coral reefs?

Article Abstract:

Researchers are discovering that coral reefs are less imperiled by human activity than previously believed and that damaged reefs have the ability to recover. New evidence is emerging on the reasons for coral reef decline.
