Preparation, analysis and atmospheric production of multifunctional organic nitrates

Article Abstract:

The continuing problem of high ozone levels makes it necessary to make ambient measurements of multifunctional organic nitrates in order to improve understanding of issues relating to tropospheric ozone formation. The atmospheric oxidation of alkenes seems to give large quantities of multifunctional organic nitrates, probably the result of difficulties connected with irreversible adsorption on sample lines. Experiments have however failed to detect multifunctional organic nitrates in atmospheric samples.

Laboratory and field investigation of the DNPH cartridge technique for the measurement of atmospheric carbonyl compounds

Article Abstract:

Three types of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine-coated (DNPH-coated) cartridges were tested to assess the reliability of the DNPH-coated method for measuring gas-phase carbonyl compounds. The results showed that there is significant negative interference for ozone at ozone and caronyl concentrations typical of clean ambient air. Use of the KI trap and nitric oxide titration can effectively remove ozone and thus allow interference-free measurement of carbonyl compounds with DNPH-coated cartridges.

Henry's law constants and removal processes for several atmospheric beta-hydroxy alkyl nitrates

Article Abstract:

Dilute solutions of organic nitrates in distilled water were utilized for the measurement of the Henry's law constants of 2-nitrooxyethanol, 1-nitrooxy-2-propanol, 1-nitrooxy-2-butanol and 2-nitrooxy-1-butanol. Measurements of the Henry's law constants of the beta-hydroxy alkyl nitrates indicated the temperature dependence of beta-hydroxy alkyl nitrates. Furthermore, removal of the hydroxy nitrates by wet deposition led to the equilibration of water with the aqueous solution.
