Priority initiatives squeeze science

Article Abstract:

Many UK researchers were surprised to learn that 5% of the 1995-96 research budget will be allocated to specific applied research initiatives that the government has identified as priorities. Cuts in funding for other areas of research will be made to assure funding for the priority research.

European Parliament axes patent policy

Article Abstract:

The European Parliament voted against proposed standards for biotechnology patents in the European Community. Genetic researchers supported the standards, but environmentalists and animal rights groups oppose patents of living inventions.

New tumor suppressor found in pancreatic cancer

Article Abstract:

Researchers have identified a tumor suppressor gene called Deleted in Pancreatic Cancer, locus 4 (DPC4) that plays an important role in pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic tumors grow aggressively if DPC4 is lost or mutated.
