Proposals that would limit visas strike fear at universities

Article Abstract:

Universities and high-tech companies worry that immigration-law changes will hurt US research. Most feared are amendments Alan Simpson proposed and retracted, but which may reappear, that would halve the time of temporary research visas and eliminate the 'outstanding researcher' green-card track.

The spell of sonoluminescence

Scientists have proposed several explanations for the light produced when ultrasound pervades a flask of water containing a hot toaster wire. Their theories will be presented at a Dec 1996 meeting of the Acoustical Societies of American and Japan.

The subtle flirtation of ultracold atoms

Scientists have discovered correlations between collisions of ultracold atoms and more common phenomena. Ultracold collisions provide insight into the one-on-one interactions of atoms in Bose-Einstein condensates.
