Pumping coal

Article Abstract:

Waste Management and Processors, Inc. will break ground for the first U.S. coal-to-diesel production facility, in Gilberton, as the plant will process 1.4 million tons of waste coal a year to generate approximately 5,000 barrels a day of diesel fuel. The resultant fuel in cleaner than conventional, sulfur-free diesel and the coal-derived fuel spews 10 percent of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons and 70 percent of the particulates.

Training the brain: Cognitive therapy as an alternative to ADHD drugs

Article Abstract:

Studies support the belief that many children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have cognitive deficits specifically in working memory, the ability to hold in mind information that guides behavior. Swedish biotech firm Cogmed has thus prepared software RoboMemo to improve working memory that helps to alleviate ADHD symptoms.

Bugs and drugs

Article Abstract:

The technology has revealed a factor often overlooked as a source of individual responses to drugs called as gut microflora. The microflora may even influence some drugs that turn toxic in a minority of people, such as Vioxx with its cardiovascular complications where gut bacteria could determine how well medicines work.
