Quake prediction tool gains ground

Article Abstract:

Some seismologists believe that a method used to correctly predict three earthquakes in Greece may have some validity. Solid-state physicist Panayiotis Varotsos and his colleagues used giant voltmeters to record changes in crust electrical activity believed to precede earthquakes.

Warnings precede Chinese temblors

Article Abstract:

Chinese seismologists successfully predicted three of seven earthquakes in a three-month period by extrapolating from ongoing seismic activity. Based on the predictions, more than 150,000 people were evacuated from the epicentral area, which saved many lives.

Faraway tsunami hints at a really big Northwest quake

Article Abstract:

Researchers have found evidence of a magnitude 9 earthquake in the Pacific Northwest about 300 years ago that could have triggered a two-meter-high tsunami. This finding coincides with historical records of a tsunami in Japan in 1700.
