Quality management organizations and techniques

Article Abstract:

The use of total quality management (TQM) techniques in the construction industry is analyzed. TQM is a corporate strategy designed to improve quality and includes the inputs of all employees. It aims to achieve customer satisfaction, cost efficiency and hig-quality work by concentrating on betterproduction methods, teamwork and manpower training. It also serves as an environment to foster innovation in the construction industry. TQM has proven to be a successful management tool in the manufacturing and service industries in Japan and the United States. In fact, Japanese construction firms have implemented TQM as early as the 1970s.

Causes of quality deviations in design and construction

Article Abstract:

A study initiated by the Construction Industry Institute (CII) examined the reasons behind design and construction changes and the related costs. Relevant data are gathered from nine industrial projects and pinpoint expenditures related to changes in design and construction. Examination of the data reveal that these changes comprise 12.4% of the total cost. Design alterations constitute 78% of the total number of changes, 79% of the cost for alterations and 9.5% of the total cost. Alterations in construction constitute 16% of the total number of changes, 17% of the cost for alterations and 2.5% of the total cost.

Using quality circles to raise productivity and quality of work life

Article Abstract:

The feasibility of using quality circles in the construction industry is examined. The study was initiated by the Israeli National Building Research Institute to improve industry productivity and quality. The aim of the study is to dispel the misconception that quality circles are unsuitable in the construction industry for a number of reasons such as the unique nature of construction projects, short-term problems and an unstable labor force. However, factors such as a low start-up efficiency and repetitive production methods point to the applicability of quality circles in the industry.
