Radiolytic elimination of organochlorine in pulp mill effluent

Article Abstract:

The effectiveness of radiolysis of individual chlorinated organic compounds as a potential biological treatment method is evaluated. Bench-scale experiments were conducted to investigate the radiolytic elimination of organochlorine in pulp mill effluent. More than 95%, 90%, 70% and 60% adsorbable organic halogen removal was achieved for doses up to 60 kGy, respectively, for biotreated, untreated, E-stage and C-stage effluent. Organochlorine removal increased at high pH and in the absence of oxygen.

Spatial and temporal trends of atmospheric organochlorine vapors in the Central and Upper Great Lakes

Article Abstract:

Air samples collected from surrounding regions of the Central and Upper Great Lakes were analyzed to determine the levels of organochlorine (OC)contaminants. High levels of polychlorinated biphenyls were detected in air samples collected from Saginaw, MI, and Traverse City, MI, compared to Sault Ste. Marie, MI,. Furthermore, atmospheric PCB concentrations in all of the sites were higher during the summer months indicating seasonal shifting of pollutants.

Isolation of macromolecular chlorolignosulfonic acids and lignosulfonic acids from pulp mill effluents and the river Rhine using XAD-8 macroporous resin and ultrafiltration

Article Abstract:

The isolation of macromolecular chlorolignosulfonic acids from sulfite pulp mill effluents and from river water by XAD-8 adsorption chromatography and ultrafiltration is discussed. The chlorolignosulfonic acids isolated from pulp mill effluents were structurally investigated by pyrolysis-mass spectrometry and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The effectivity of XAD-8 adsorption chromatography was demonstrated.
