Rebuilding history

Article Abstract:

Reconstruction work on the Canton Viaduct, Massachusetts, has allowed this early 19th century structure to continue in service. The viaduct is on the National Register of Historic places, but deterioration had slowed the passage of the 50 trains per day which pass over the bridge. The $10 million rehabilitation project included preservation work as well as strengthening and widening the structure to permit the development of Amtrak's high-speed rail service between New York and Boston. Amtrak and viaduct owners Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority shared the restoration costs.

Mapping history

Article Abstract:

The pipeline-looping project to widen the gas supply in the Banff area, initiated by Canadian Western Natural Gas, utilizes a design integrating all engineering, environmental and social considerations. The Bow Corridor in Alberta is archaeologically sensitive. The design applies a predictive modeling to the entire corridor to identify a route with few archaeological sites. The geographic information systems model has been used to investigate for historic and prehistoric sites in the project.

Mapping with a differential

Article Abstract:

Salem County Utilities Authority officials decided to use Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) real-time techniques to topographically survey the Salem County Landfill. DGPS' rapid turnaround time reduced a two-month process to two weeks. The technology is used to create a comprehensive base map of the 40-acre permitted area. Whereas aerial photogrammetry costs around $10,000, the annual cost expected from using DGPS techniques is $7,000.
