Relating ion binding by fulvic and humic acids to chemical composition and molecular size. 1. Proton binding

Article Abstract:

Humic acid, humic acid size fractions, and fulvic acid are studied for their effect on the binding of metal ions and protons, and described using the NICA-Donnan model. The charging behavior of the humic substances is graphed as a function of ionic strength and proton concentration.

Relating ion binding by fulvic and humic acids to chemical composition and molecular size. 2. Metal binding

Article Abstract:

The binding of Pb(II) and Cu(II) to humic acid, humic acid size fractions, and fulvic acid at pH levels of 8, 6, and 4 is measured in metal titration experiments. The sorbtion of Pb(II) and Cu(II) is graphed for different soil environments, showing a general correlation with the NICA-Donnan model.

Transport of in situ mobilized colloidal particles in packed soil columns

Article Abstract:

Research results indicate that, because of size exclusion effects, in-soil colloidal particles travel faster than nitrate, a conservative tracer. The results also show that colloidal particles have a greater dispersivity than the nitrate tracer. Colloidal particle dispersivity is essentially unrelated to pore water velocity, while such velocity increases tracer dispersivity.
