Rescuing an American icon

Article Abstract:

Chemical research as well as new technologies in hybridization and tissue culture now offer hope for the preservation of the American elm tree and the defeat of Dutch elm disease. American elms, widely planted in the early part of the 20th century, were all but eradicated by the disease.

Five easy pieces: a smart material could make now-complex helicopter rotors simpler and safer

Article Abstract:

An adaptive material for rotor blades has been developed, using piezoelectric ceramics. The new design will eliminate the expensive and complex system of rotor blades and may even provide for safer rides. However, the system has to undergo further testing before full use.

Gaztech International has introduced a ventilation controller that calls for more fresh air when it senses unfavorable air conditions indoors. The Ventostat 2001 Series can recognize humidity and specific gases such as carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide.
