Research priorities for fueling fuel cells called into question

Article Abstract:

By 2004, automobile manufacturers must install fuel cells in new cars. Yet, fuel cell technology might not be ready. Methanol-based fuel cells might be ready in time. Gasoline-based fuel cells will not be ready. A different fuel cell does not make hydrogen internally as is done in the two mentioned types of fuel cells. It uses liquid hydrogen. This technology is being neglected. Developing this cell would require less time. One important consideration, however, is public acceptance. Experts point out that technology has improved and today, hydrogen is safer than gasoline.
