Retrofitting a landmark

Article Abstract:

Structural engineers faced the task of integrating new building components with the existing structure to rehabilitate the Citadel in Los Angeles, CA, into a retail factory outlet and commercial office. The project required the redesign of important structural elements in compliance with current codes without changing the Castle's renowned features. The engineers used a computerized load analysis and technological innovations to reinforce the building and achieve its desired stability while maintaining its appearance.

Beating swords into slot machines

Article Abstract:

Engineering consultancy firm DeSimone, Chaplin & Dobryn was tasked with converting a manufacturing plant for nuclear reactors in Uncasville, CT, into a casino for Sun International. The design incorporated some of the old building's space due to time constraints associated with a fast-track schedule. The existing buildings were upgraded to meet current state seismic building codes. The interior of the facility was designed to reflect a Mohegan theme, evident in the use of structures that reflect the four seasons.

Gabions and geogrids

Article Abstract:

The combination of gabions and geogrid reinforcements for retaining walls results in a more stable structure. However, improper applications may also cause structural failures. Gabions are free-draining, unaffected by hydrostatic pressures and frost-resistant but are costly and non-durable. An analysis of a failed gabion-faced geogrid-reinforced embankment showed that geogrid reinforcement placement and the connections between geogrids and gabions influence structural stability.
