Riding the waves

Article Abstract:

Steel will continue to be the preferred material of shipbuilders. However, it will have to conform to increasingly exact standards as steel makers compete with each other for orders. Improvements in measurement technology will aid in the selection of different steels for particular uses. Growing environmental concerns will cause shipbuilders to build environment friendly ships such as double-hulled tankers which require about 4,500 tons more steel than conventional tankers. Current design codes are predicted to relax slightly due to the properties of modern high-strength steel.
