Role of soot carbon and other carbon matrices in the distribution of PAHs among particles, DOC, and the dissolved phase in the effluent and recipient waters of an aluminum reduction plant

Article Abstract:

Soot carbon may control the partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) between the dissolved and particulate phases in industrial wastewater, according to Norwegian and Swedish researchers. The study, which investigated the effluent and recipient waters of an aluminum reduction plant in Soderberg, Norway, also found the partition coefficients to be higher than would be expected on the basis of organic carbon-water partitioning alone. Researchers also discovered apparent different sorption mechanisms at work with dissolved organic carbon (DOC) than with particulate organic carbon and soot.

Flux estimates and pattern recognition of particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, and dibenzofurans in the waters outside various emission sources on the Swedish Baltic coast

Article Abstract:

Sediment trap fluxes were estimated for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) for water samples taken near emission sources around the Baltic coast in Sweden. Soft Independent Modeling of Class Analogy, a multivariate pattern-recognition technique, revealed a unique emission profile for PAH and PCDD/F for all the sources. The research indicated that a major source of PCDD/F was a pulp and paper mill. The total emission of PAH from the Swedish Baltic municipalities to the waters near the coast represented 1% of the total Baltic flux.

Role of soot carbon and other carbon matrices in the distribution of PAHs among particles, DOC, and the dissolved phase in the effluent and recipient waters of an aluminum reduction plant

Article Abstract:

Sampling in the seawater scrubbers of a Norwegian aluminum smelter plant was conducted to evaluate the action of soot carbon in mitigating the transport of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) into aquatic ecosystems. Soot carbon was found to control the partitioning between the dissolved and particulate phases of PAHs, which is higher than that which can be attributed to organic carbon-water partitioning. Results show that an as-yet undiscovered mechanism is at work in the sorption mechanism of dissolved organic carbon than that of organic carbon and soot.
