Roy Chapman Andrews and the business of exploring: cetology and conservation in progressive America

Article Abstract:

This article discusses cetologist and natural historian Roy Chapman Andrews' research expeditions in the Pacific, observations of whale species and the Asian whale industry's use of whale by-products, and his successful attempts to turn natural history into a profitable business. Late 19th century science was subsidized by wealthy philanthropists and foundations which influenced the direction of research programs; Andrews incorporated scientific modernization into the whaling industry.

In harm's way

Article Abstract:

Research supports the theory that pesticide usage is directly linked to health problems in humans. Studies on human populations located near agricultural areas show a correlation between pesticide exposure and cancer rates, low birth weights and infant mortality. Test scores from grade-school children also indicate pesticide exposure may interfere with cognitive ability.
