Rural research in Australia

Article Abstract:

Australia has developed a research and development program that is well-worth its cost and has produced many technologies that has benefitted the nation a great deal. The program is based on cooperation between the research community and rural producers, who jointly set goals and secure budgets.

Australia enters deep water in devising management plan

Article Abstract:

The 1994 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) has provided Australia incentive to developing a cohesive marine science policy. The treaty will permit Australia to claim territory that it proves are natural extensions of the continental shelf.

Science holds on in new budget

Article Abstract:

Australia's new conservative government cut less from the science budget than many had anticipated. Administration and other costs must be reduced, and universities will face a 5% reduction in government aid between 1996 and 1999.
