Russian deal bolsters the space station - at a price

Article Abstract:

The US agreed to provide financing for the Russian space program in exchange for continued use of the Mir space station and Russian contributions to the international space station. NASA, which previously renegotiated deals with Canada and Europe, will be strained to stay within its $2.1-billion budget.

Russian money woes endanger project: space station

Article Abstract:

Congress could deny funding for the international space station if Russia does not provide its space agency with funds it had promised to build crucial parts of the station. Vice Pres Gore did evoke a promise of the funding from Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin, but fulfillment is uncertain.

Science may gain in station melee

Article Abstract:

A delay in the launching of the first component of the international space station due to Russia's failure to fulfill its part may allow time for new space shuttle missions carrying microgravity and life-science experiments. Congress may describe to scrap the station if the Russians fail to comply.
