SAB review of dioxin risk reassessment delayed until at least end of year

Article Abstract:

The EPA Science Advisory Board (SAB) has delayed the second review of the EPA dioxin reassessment until the end of 1996 to allow reviewers ample time to modify two chapters of the nine-chapter document. The reassessment contains data on the levels of dioxin found in the environment and the risks posed by exposures to dioxin and other organochlorine compounds. In Sep. 1995, SAB members were scheduled to make a final review of the document but delayed it after discovering that EPA had failed to support its conclusions with strong evidence linking dioxin to health problems.

EPA on the right track

Article Abstract:

The environmental services and equipment industry is generally satisfied with the EPA's draft report on the health risks posed by dioxin and compounds with dioxin-like toxicity to human beings and to other life forms. The industry particularly commends to EPA's decision to get outside scientists involved in the project with the finding that the risks have become greater, the EPA should take steps to develop a national policy which can effectively eliminate the problem, mainly by identifying and removing all sources of exposure to these substances.
