Article Abstract:

The communications systems associated with the ThrustSSC supersonic car will be a vital element in its attempt to break the world land speed record. It was determined that the VHF band is the most suitable frequency band for providing links of between 10 miles and 15 miles between the car, pit station and supporting vehicles. The pit station has an aerial mast at each end, and will use two 1 mt telemetry receiver dishes and a VHF dipole. The team working on the record attempt will use a total of 29 radios.

Safety first

Article Abstract:

Engineers working on the TrustSSC supersonic car have placed extremely strong emphasis on safety systems. There are sensors throughout the car for monitoring the condition of components, and there are also mechanical and independent electrical systems which will implement safety critical parts of the system if the on-board computers fail. There is a hydraulic pressure system controlling the active system, but this is a backed up with a mechanical system.
