Article Abstract:

UK-based AEA Technology has developed a new laser micro machining process that allows for the design of very fine tipped glass fiber probes. The result of the development is the installation of the world's first laser microlathe at Hewlett-Packard's Fibre-Optic Division. The lathe, installed at the company's Ipswich, UK, plant in March 1996, improves the coupling between the fiber and communication diode with the inclusion of a lens between the two surfaces. Applications for laser micro machining could include communications, sensors, medical and the production of electronic circuit devices.

Article Abstract:

The newest machining centers have several improved features. Among these are spindle speeds of at least 30,000 to 4,000 rev/min which allows the light-cut machining of hard materials in tool and die making and the removal of large amounts of light metals such as aerospace aluminium. These new machines also use polymer concrete materials to control vibration and have expanded workpiece capacity to accomodate more parts in a single set-up.

Computer numerical control

Article Abstract:

Computer numerical control (CNC) systems have revolutionized the design and production of machine tools. CNCs can control specific machine functions such as operating cycles and speeds, interface with operators and connect machines to other computer systems. Existing CNC systems are also faster and more powerful such as Heidenhain's 400 series which features 900 megabytes of hard disk capacity and 4 milliseconds block processing speed.
